Progress Report

Local Preference

Ross has achieved ongoing preference for local suppliers and contractors so that local rate payers dollars stay in the local area to support local businesses and jobs. This is not always achievable on some major projects. When these cases arise Ross always ensures that there are local tradesmen and suppliers included in the selection criteria.

Planning and Development

Ross is Chairman of one of council's most challenging portfolios - Planning and Development.

Since 2008, Council has been working towards one Planning Scheme for the whole of the Region, instead of the previous four Schemes. This allows for consistency in decision making as well as looking at the bigger picture. The new Bundaberg Region Planning Scheme was officially adopted on 13th October 2015. The new Scheme has been structured around three key elements
    -preservation of Agricultural Land
-rural residential (I prefer the word Lifestyle) lots on non-agricultural land to ensure our local communities grow and
-urban growth where services are available to accommodate an additional 30-50,000 residents by 2031.

Ross has also assisted many residents of the Region and Developers with their Planning and Building Applications by promoting free pre-lodgement meetings with Councils Planning officers. This has been well received by Consultants and the general public. The pre-lodgement meetings deal with all matters affecting the proposal and the applicant is aware of all costs and processes involved.

China-Asean Expo; Nanning, China

Bundaberg's sister city relationship with Nanning, China provides a unique opportunity for Bundaberg.

Nanning, China hosts the China-Asean Expo which is the largest trade expo event in Asia and Ross led the first non-Asian delegation to the Expo in October 2010.

Bundaberg businesses were very successful in establishing links with Chinese businesses that promise to develop into long term opportunities for the Bundaberg region in the fields of tourism, horticulture, manufacturing, hospitality, education, aviation and nursing.

Representing Bundaberg Region

Ross has represented the Bundaberg region at the Sister City Association Conference, the Central Queensland On The Go Summit, the Wide Bay Institute of TAFE Open Day at the Bundaberg Campus, Planning Forums and ANZAC Day and  Remembrance Day services. Ross also represents Council locally as its Urban Development Institute Of Australia (UDIA) representative and Crimestoppers.
